Lunch is the time for giving your body the fuel it needs to function the rest of the day. It’s also a time when you can creatively get servings of fruits, dairy and protein. Why are these foods from the Food Pyramid important? Fruits provide vitamins, fiber and anti-oxidants, and they’re fat and cholesterol free. Dairy products contain calcium and other bone-building nutrients, especially important during the school-age years when lots of bone growth occurs. Protein foods are important for building muscle and for many functions in the body. The following simple sandwich provides 50% - half – the daily recommended amount of calcium when you have it with a glass of milk. It supplies protein from the turkey, and the lettuce, tomato and orange give you vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C and potassium, important for your muscles.
