"COOKING WITH KIDS" FACT SHEET

What is "Cooking With Kids?"
“Cooking With Kids” is a :90 second feature program designed to promote health, nutrition and the USDA Food Guide Pyramid. Host John Sarich and a group of kids (from organizations like the Girl Scouts and Boys & Girls Clubs) prepare healthy meals. Before each recipe is presented a registered dietitian explains the nutritional value of the recipe.  Cut-away nutritional graphics show the benefits of each meal.

Why was "Cooking With Kids" created?

“Cooking With Kids” was inspired by the reality of childhood eating disorders. The program shows how easy it is for kids to prepare snacks and meals that taste good and that are good for them – using the five food groups as a platform for nutrition messages.
Childhood obesity, anorexia (and other eating disorders), Type II Diabetes and low bone density have become national issues..

What are the program’s goals?

“Cooking With Kids” wants to encourage parents and children to spend time in the kitchen together preparing healthy meals. Not only will this improve communication, it will help a child develop healthy nutritional habits.

Who supports “Cooking With Kids”?

The Totem Council Girl Scouts, Boys & Girls Clubs of Seattle, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the American Dietetic Association and the Washington Dairy Products Commission have contributed time, staff and expertise to this program.
